PNND leaders promote new parliamentary appeal on nuclear abolition

Three of the PNND Co-Presidents - Saber Chowdhury, Sue Miller and Uta Zapf - this month circulated a new parliamentary appeal on nuclear aboliton to members of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament (PNND) encouraging them to endorse, and to use the appeal to build political will from governments to negotiate for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. Framework Forum brings governments and experts together in Geneva to ‘walk through the door’ to a nuclear weapons free world

UN representatives and parliamentarians from 17 countries* met with disarmament experts on Saturday 24 August for a Framework Forum roundtable to discuss the exciting new United Nations process for multilateral disarmament – the Open Ended Working Group on Taking Forward Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament Negotiations (OEWG), which has been meeting at the Palais de Nations in Geneva in May, June and August before reporting back to the United Nations General Assembly this October. OSCE Parliamentary Assembly supports new UN process for nuclear disarmament

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) agreed today to support the UN Open Ended Working Group on Taking Forward Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament Negotiations (OEWG), a new UN process designed to break the 17-year deadlock on nuclear disarmament negotiations in the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva. Parliamentarians instrumental to success of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Government delegates and non-governmental observers to the Conference of States Parties to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (the 2013 NPT Prep Com) in Geneva were reminded on Monday of the important role that parliamentarians have in the shared goal to achieve a nuclear-weapons-free world. NATO parliamentarians to Obama: Enact your vision of a nuclear-weapon-free world

A group of parliamentarians from NATO countries have addressed the US President Barack Obama with a letter supporting his efforts for global nuclear disarmament. The initiative was developed in Prague, before the fourth anniversary of Obama’s ground-breaking speech on nuclear disarmament from April 5, 2009, by Senator Alena Gajduskova, First Vice-President of the Czech Senate and Paul Dewar MP (Canada), and undertaken in cooperation with the global network of Parliamentarians for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND). Nuclear Weapons Free World - focus of 2014 assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

Nearly 1000 parliamentarians from approximately 150 parliaments, meeting at the 128th Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Quito, Ecuador from Mar 22-27, agreed to the recommendation of the IPU Standing Committee on Peace and International Security for the topic "Towards a Nuclear-Weapons-Free World: The Contribution of Parliaments" to be a focus of the 130th IPU Assembly in 2014. Oslo wake-up call for nuclear abolition: 127 countries attend conference on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons

Delegates from 127 countries as well as several UN organisations, the International Red Cross movement, representatives of civil society and media attended the Oslo Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons.
