Recent studies on the unacceptable risks of nuclear weapons have elevated the global imperative for nuclear disarmament. Over 150 countries meeting in Vienna in December last year, highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian impact of any use of nuclear weapons, and the need for States to work together to fill the legal gap to abolish them globally. This could be achieved at the 4-week long Non-Proliferation Treaty meeting in April-May 2015.
On the other hand, tensions in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North East Asia and between the nuclear-armed States are stimulating nuclear proliferation and hindering the elimination of nuclear deterrence from security doctrines.
This roundtable will discuss parliamentary and political initiatives for nuclear disarmament, the role of cooperative security to phase out nuclear deterrence, and the importance of this issue for the OSCE, Helsinki +40 and the Annual Assembly of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Helsinki.
Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (PNND) is a cross-party network of 800 parliamentarians from over 80 countries working to achieve the peace and security of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
